Ceramic Course in Antalya
What we do in the ceramic course
In our ceramic course in Antalya, participants first get to know ceramic clay and hand-building techniques and learn to make basic three-dimensional forms. Over time they gain the skills to create any form they wish with these techniques. Alongside shaping, they learn ceramic decoration techniques and begin to add colour to the pieces they have made. Depending on each participant's interests, the work can include tableware and kitchen ceramics in particular, as well as decorative ceramics, ceramic jewellery, ceramic panels, relief surfaces and ceramic sculpture.
Ceramic course techniques
At the start of the ceramic course, participants learn hand-building techniques step by step and make free-form pieces. The main techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building. Once these are learned and practised, participants begin to make their own designs, prepared as drawings or small models. The goal is for each participant to plan the object or ceramic surface they have in mind in full detail and build it step by step. Later, depending on their interests, participants can also learn to work with moulds and make reliefs.
Materials and firing
In the ceramic course we mainly use white clay, but participants who wish can also work with other clays: for example red clay, which is often used for pottery, or grogged clay, which is especially suited to sculpture and ceramic panels. Imported coloured clays can also be used. Basic hand tools, banding wheels and moulds are available at our ceramic studio. Pieces are fired in two stages: a bisque firing and a glaze firing.
Colours and glazes
Besides clay and basic materials, underglaze colours and a clear glaze are provided by our studio. If you would like to use ready-made glazes in other colours and effects, you can buy them yourself; they are easy to find from suppliers.
