10 Things to Know Before You Start a Ceramics Course in Antalya

If you would like to start ceramics but are not sure where to begin, we have gathered the questions we hear most often at our studio in Muratpaşa, Antalya, in one place. Reading these 10 points before you sign up will help you know what to expect from your first class.
1. No experience needed
You can join our ceramic course even if you have never touched clay before. Everything is explained from the basics in the first months, and you do not need any drawing skills or art background.
2. The course is for ages 15 and over
Our ceramic course is open to everyone aged 15 and over.
3. Classes are once a week for 3 hours
The ceramic course is a group class held once a week for 3 hours. A new group starts on any day except Sunday as soon as at least 2 people sign up. We can agree on a day that suits you.
4. There is no fixed start date
The course has no terms or semesters, so you can start in any month you like.
5. The basic techniques are taught in the first 2 months
In the first two months you work on the basic hand-building techniques: pinching, coiling and slab building. With these you learn to make basic forms such as bowls, plates and mugs, and to decorate their surfaces.
6. Plan to come for at least 2 months to make your own designs
Once you have learned the basics, you are free to work on your own designs: sculpture, panels, jewellery, tableware or any object you have in mind. That is why we recommend attending for at least 2 months if you want to work on your own projects.
7. Basic materials are provided; special glazes are up to you
Clay, basic materials, underglaze colours and a clear glaze are provided by our studio. If you would like to use ready-made glazes in other colours and effects, you can buy them yourself.
8. Finishing a piece takes patience
The piece you make does not go home straight away. It first dries, then goes through a bisque firing; after that it is decorated and finished with a glaze firing. This two-stage firing is what makes ceramics durable and usable. You will also learn surface decoration techniques such as slips along the way.
9. Wear comfortable clothes
Working with clay is fun but a little messy. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes you do not mind getting dirty, and keeping your nails short, which makes shaping the clay easier.
10. Ceramic course or pottery wheel course?
The ceramic course is based on hand-building and is taught in a group. If you would like to work on the pottery wheel, our pottery wheel course is taught as private one-to-one lessons. The two courses have different fees; contact us for current information. If you would like to try it out first, you can join one of our one-day or two-day ceramic workshops.
